The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over an escalating global healthcare staffing shortage ahead of the 2030s, driven by an aging workforce and an aging global population.

Drawing from data across more than 100 nations, the WHO projects an international deficit of 11.1 million healthcare professionals by 2030. Approximately 25% of doctors worldwide are expected to retire within the next decade.

Key points highlighted in the report include:

67 nations are on track to fall short of the staffing levels necessary to preserve their current standards of medical care.

832,000 additional workers are immediately needed simply to keep the ratio of medical personnel to patients stable.

Higher-income countries, particularly in Europe, face severe demographic pressure, with one out of three doctors poised to retire in the coming ten years.

Increased recruitment of foreign personnel to fill gaps in wealthier nations risks worsening brain drain and eroding healthcare quality in lower-income regions.
